Boiler Super-Heater & Re-heater Material

The highest metal temperature of pressure parts in the steam generating unit occur in the super-heater and re-heater. Consequently, these tubes are made of material having superior high temperature properties and resistance to oxidation.

Carbon steel is a suitable and economical material to about 454 to 510 degree Celsius metal temperature, depending on pressure. Above this range, alloy and stainless steel are required because of the low oxidation resistance and the low stresses of carbon steel.

Usually two or more alloys are used in construction of the super-heater. The lower alloys, such as carbon and C-Mo steel are used toward the inlet section, while the low and intermediate alloy Cr-Mo steel are used toward the outlet, where the steam and metal temperature are increasing

Stainless steel tubes have been require in the hot test section of super-heater. However, stainless steel are being replaced in many application by 9Cr-1Mo-V. This high strength ferritic steel was developed initially by Oak Ridge National Laboratories for fast breeder nuclear reactor components. However, it has found many application in fossil fuel-fired boiler boiler because of its high strength and excellent toughness.

Because it is ferritic, its use in place of stainless steel elimination dissimilar metal weld failure.
